Why Loading Your Ligaments & Tendons Matters More As You Get Older

When we think about exercise, we often think about muscles.

Building muscle.

Getting stronger.

Lifting weights.

And yes — muscle is hugely important.

But there are two other structures that quietly do a huge amount of work every single day…

Your ligaments and tendons.

They are the structures that help keep us strong, stable, powerful and able to move confidently through life.

What do ligaments and tendons actually do?

Think of your body like a suspension system.

Tendons connect your muscles to your bones.

They transfer the force your muscles create into movement. They help you walk, climb stairs, lift, push, pull, jump and create power.

They also act a bit like springs — absorbing force and releasing energy when we move.

Ligaments connect bone to bone.

Their role is to support and stabilise your joints. They help control movement and give feedback to your brain about where your body is in space.

This is called proprioception.

It’s what helps you:

✔️ Balance on uneven ground

✔️ Catch yourself if you trip

✔️ React quickly

✔️ Feel stable and confident when moving

Basically — they help your body trust itself.

When we are younger… we load them without even thinking

Children and young adults naturally challenge their bodies every day.

They:

Run

Jump

Skip

Climb

Twist

Change direction

Play sports

Without even knowing it they are constantly loading their ligaments and tendons.

They are asking their body to absorb impact, create power and react quickly.

That’s why jumping, running and moving explosively feels so much easier when we are younger — because we are practising it all the time.

But then life changes.

We get older.

We sit more.

We stop playing.

We stop jumping.

We avoid movements that feel hard.

And the less we ask our body to do… the less capable it becomes.

What happens to ligaments and tendons if we stop loading them?

The saying “use it or lose it” really does apply.

As we age, our tendons and ligaments naturally change.

They can:

✔️ Become stiffer

✔️ Lose elasticity

✔️ Become less efficient at absorbing force

✔️ React slower

✔️ Take longer to recover and repair

But age isn’t the only reason this happens.

Lack of movement plays a massive role.

Your body is clever — it adapts to what you repeatedly ask it to do.

If we only ever move slowly, in small ranges and avoid challenging movement…

Our body gets really good at that.

But life isn’t predictable.

You trip over a curb.

You slip in mud.

You need to catch yourself.

You walk downhill.

You step awkwardly.

Suddenly your body needs strength, stability, reaction and control.

And this is why we need to keep training these systems.

Does that mean we all need to start jumping?

No. We can but there are other ways to help strength and protect our ligaments and tendons as we age

This is where we need to train smarter.

When we are younger we might get that stimulus from jumping and high impact exercise.

As we get older we can create similar benefits by controlling how we move.

One of my favourite ways:

Slow down. Power up.

For example:

A slow controlled squat down…

Then a powerful drive back up.

A slow controlled lunge lowering…

Then push strongly away.

That slower lowering phase loads your muscles, tendons and joints.

The quicker movement back teaches your body to create strength and power.

Power isn’t just for athletes.

Power is what helps us:

✔️ Get up from the floor

✔️ Climb stairs easily

✔️ Walk confidently

✔️ React quickly

✔️ Keep doing the hobbies we love

Movement needs variety

Walking is brilliant.

But life doesn’t only happen forwards and we need impact as well!

Your body is designed to:

Rotate

Reach

Twist

Step sideways

Bend

Balance

Your ligaments and tendons need to experience movement in different directions, different ranges and forces

That’s why training in all planes of movement is so important as we age.

What about Aqua?

Aqua is fantastic way to work not just our muscles but our Ligaments

and tendons

The water supports your joints while still allowing you to:

✔️ Build strength

✔️ Improve mobility

✔️ Challenge balance

✔️ Move with less impact

But there is one important thing…

You still need range of movement.

Tiny movements create tiny adaptations.

Big controlled movements encourage your joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons to stay strong through the ranges you actually need in everyday life.

The goal isn’t just exercise.

The goal is staying capable.

It’s being able to walk, lift, carry, play, travel, garden, ski, bike, chase grandchildren or whatever YOUR life looks like.

We are not training because we want to move like we did at 20.

We are training because we still want to move at 60, 70, 80 and beyond.

Your body was designed to move.

Load it.

Challenge it.

Use it.

Because the best way to keep your body working…

Is to keep it moving!
